What a turnaround for the New York Yankees. They win one against the New York Mets to break their seven-game losing streak yesterday, and then took two in a row, with heroic performances in extra innings in a day-night doubleheader. The amazing performance of the day was the debut of Deivi Garcia, in his major league debut in game two of the doubleheader. Garcia pitched six innings of scoreless ball while striking out six Mets in the Yankee win. Deivi couldn’t have wished to pitch better. He pitched 75 pitches, 51 of which were for strikes.
The New York Yankees entered the doubleheader after winning one game against the Mets in a Saturday matinee, after losing seven straight games, which the Yankees haven’t done since 2017. The Yankees with big hopes hoped to win both games yesterday to take their first series in the last three. They did that, and did it in amazing fashion, winning both of the games in extra innings.
In game one Michael King started for the Yankees and lasted 3.2 innings allowing six hits and two earned runs. He actually pitched quite well, before things got sticky. He left the bases loaded for Brooks Kriske, who went on to allow five runs and currently has a 20.25 ERA. He gave the Mets the lead they needed to establish a chance for victory. King with little problem kept the Mets scoreless through three innings, but the third he ran into trouble loading the bases. Manager Aaron Boone pulled him and replaced him in fourth, with Brooks Kriske who gave up five runs in just 1.1 innings.
The New York Mets led the Yankees, 7-2 after the bottom of the sixth inning. But in the bottom of the seventh, the Yankees scored five runs in a rally that left the game tied and caused extra innings. This was the first time this season that the Yankees faced an extra-inning game with a man on second base. The Mets failed to score in the top of the eighth inning. At the bottom of the inning, Gio Urshela had a walk-off single scoring Mike Tauchman from third, for the Yankees win. Final score Yankees 8 and the Mets 7. Edwin Diaz took the loss for the Mets and Chad Green, after a perfect top of the eighth took the win for the New York Yankees.
“I’m going out to play catch with my son”
Before the start of game two, 40-year-old veteran catcher Erik Kratz dashed out the dugout to take his place at backstop. As he emerged, he briefly turned and shouted back at the dugout saying “I’m going out to play catch with my son, referring to the age difference between him and the 21-year-old Deivi Garcia.
Game two featured the major league debut of Yankee prospect Deivi Garcia. The 21-year-old Garcia took the mound with the confidence of a much more seasoned veteran. He pitched a one, two, three first-inning, setting up the tone for the game. Garcia went six scoreless innings without an earned run in his major league debut. Tyler Wade started off the game with his first home run of the season. The Mets tied the game in the sixth at one apiece.
The seventh inning was scoreless for both teams, leading to the New York Yankees’ second extra-inning game in a row. At the top of the eighth inning, Gary Sanchez who hasn’t been able to hit his way out of a paper bag hit a grand slam, with the bases loaded for the Yankee 5-1 lead. At the bottom of the inning, the Mets got another run but it wasn’t enough, and the Yankees won the game in extra innings. The winning pitcher was Jonathan Holder, the loser the Mets Smith, and Luis Cessa got the save in the game.
In game two, Gary Sanchez stole the spotlight from Deivi Garcia’s debut pitching performance, but it was Garcia that won the game for the Yankees. All in all two Yankee triple-A pitchers won the Yankees Mets series for the Yankees. Today the New York Yankees will go into a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Ray with momentum. The first game one Monday night will be started with New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole facing right-hander Tyler Glasnow.
