New York Yankees Recap: Home runs lead the Orioles to win over the Yankees

The New York Yankees are coming off a sweep of the Miami Marlins, and tonight at Yankee Stadium will look to win game one from the Baltimore Orioles to accomplish another sweep. The Yankees are in 3rd place in the AL East, 7 games behind The Tampa Bay Rays. The Baltimore Orioles sit at the bottom of the East 26 games back but have played well recently, winning six of their last 10 games. Tonight new Yankee pitcher Andrew Heaney started against the Orioles Jorge Lopez. The Yankees ended up with a very disappointing loss to the O’s. The final score was 7-1 Orioles.

Heaney took to the mound for the first time as New York Yankee facing Cedrick Mancini flew out to left. Austin Hays popped out to LeMahieu. Trey Mancini flew out to end a perfect half for Heaney. DJ LeMahieu led off the bottom by grounding out. Anthony Rizzo, to huge applause, took to the plate and got plunked and went to first. Rizzo went to second on a balk. Aaron Judge ground out to left. Joey Gallo, in his home debut, walked. With two on and two outs, Giancarlo Stanton ground out to third to end the half stranding two. No score

At the second, Ryan Mountcastle led off by doubling down the left-field line. Anthony Santander struck out. Ramon Urias flew out to Stanton playing right field for the first time this year. Pedro Severino tapped back to Heaney for the final out. Rougie Odor led off the bottom by grounding out to short. Gary Sanchez walked. Gleyber Torres flew out to right. Brett Gardner walked. LeMahieu, with two on and two outs, ground out to second again, leaving two on base. No score.

Maikel Franco led off by grounding out. Pat Valaika went down looking. Then, Mullins homered to center for the Orioles lead. Austin Hays hit a back-to-back homer this one to left field. Trey Mancini flew out to Gardner, but the O’s picked up two runs. At the bottom, Rizzo ground out to second. Judge went down looking. Gallo also went down looking. Baltimore Orioles 2 New York Yankees 0.

The fourth inning was led off by Mountcastle, who got the third Oriole home run. Santander popped out to Rizzo. Urias hit another home run against Heaney. Severino doubled to the center-field wall. Franco doubled on a great play by Gallo at the left-field wall. Valaika struck out swinging, but the O’s picked up another two runs. At the bottom, Stanton ground out to third. Odor had a towering out to right field foul territory. Sanchez ground out to third as the Yankees remained no-hit through four innings. Orioles 4 Yankees 0.

Mullins led off the fifth inning against new Yankee pitcher Joely Rodriguez, and he singled. He then stole second. Hays struck out on a change from J-Rod. Mullins stole third. Mancini ground out. Mountcastle was out on a fly ball to Stanton in right. At the bottom, Torres walked. Gardner out. LeMahieu out and Torres scored on a Rizzo RBI. Orioles 4 Yankees1.

At the top of the sixth, the Baltimore Orioles tacked on another two runs. At the bottom, Joey Gallo doubled. Stanton struck out. Odor popped out to short center. Sanchez popped out to the shallow right as the Yankees leave another runner stranded. So far, the Yankees could only get 2 hits off of the mediocre pitcher. Orioles 6 Yankees 1.

Mullins led off the seventh against new Yankee pitcher Lucas Luetge and flew out to Gardner in center. Hays ground out. Mancini struck out for a 1-2-3 inning for Luetge. At the bottom of the inning, Torres singled. Gardner walked. LeMahieu banged into a 6-4-3 double as he has so many times this season. Rizzo against the new Baltimore pitcher Paul Fry stuck out for the final out of the inning. Orioles 6 Yankees 1.

In the eighth inning, Mountcastle, against another Yankee pitcher, Albert Abreu, got a base hit down the left-field line for his third hit of the night. Santander singled with Mountcastle going to third base. McKenna was brought in to pinch run. Urias hit into a double play, but Mountcastle scored. Severino stuck out, but the O’s continued to tack another run. At the bottom, the inning was delayed for some time while a cat was on the field. He finally left the game in a ground-rule exit. Judge flew out to center. Gallo popped out to short. Stanton walked. Odor flew out to the centerfield wall. Orioles 6 Yankees 1 Feline 1.

Franco led off the ninth ahead by five runs, and he doubled when a fan interfered with the ball in left. An Abreu pitch hit Valaika. Mullins went down on strikes. Hays hit into a double play to end the hitting for the O’s. At the bottom, with last licks on the line for the Yankees, Gary Sanchez took to the plate and against Dillon Tate ground out to third. Gleyber Torres flew out to center. Brett Gardner, who walked three times on the night, singled. Gardner took second on indifference. DJ LeMahieu lined out to right to end the game.

The final score was the Baltimore Orioles 7 and the New York Yankees 1. The winning pitcher was Jose Lopez, and the loser was Andrew Heaney.

Note: Gerrit Cole that was supposed to start tomorrow’s game has tested positive for the Covid virus according to Aaron Boone. He will miss at least two starts. Gio Urshela is also going on the IL not Covid related, but with a hamstring injury.
