New York Yankees Previews: Yankees face the Rays today in day-night doubleheader

Gerrit Cole, New York Yankees

The New York Yankees, after suffering a devasting loss in the eighth innings last night, will again face the Tampa Bay Rays today in a doubleheader caused by the Phillie’s postponement.  Last night Yankees reliever Adam Ottavino came in in the eighth inning of a scoreless game. He walked two and threw a wild pitch putting two Rays in scoring position. The Rays Perez hit a sac fly driving in Choi for the one-run lead that Yankees could not recover from.

Today at 2:10 pm the Yankees will look to bounce back from two losses in a row when Yankee ace Gerrit Cole will take the mound in the game one of a day-night doubleheader. Cole will face Ray’s Tyler Glasnow.

Cole has been the Yankee’s only consistent pitcher, winning all three of his starts in this short season. He is presently 3-0 with an ERA of 2.55. Tonight he will go for his 20th win in a row, leading all MLB pitchers.  The record is also the sixth-longest winning streak in MLB history.  Interestingly, in all three of Cole’s starts he hasn’t really been able to shift gears into dominance.  Looking a bit shaky at times, because of the quality pitcher he is, he has managed to make the important pitches to maintain his record.

The New York Yankees will face Tyler Glasnow.  Glasnow last year was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. When he is on, he is unhittable.  Rays fans know him as a strikeout machine. Last season he got off to a scorching start last year, posting a 6-1 record with a 1.78 ERA, 2.26 FIP, 0.890 WHIP, and 76 strikeouts in 60.2 innings before his season was derailed by a throwing arm strain. This year he has not approached those stats. He has pitched in two no-decision games, striking out 14 in 8.2 innings for an ERA of 3.12.

Neither a start time nor pitching matchup has been announced for game two, at the time of this writing. If I was to make a guess, I would say the game will that at about 7 pm and will be a bullpen game for the Yankees. Guessing the Yankees will open with Jonathan Loaisiga who has been successful before. Cessa would likely follow him but that may be in question as he pitched two innings last night.  Whoever opens the game for the Yankees, he will most likely face Trevor Richards who was just recalled by the Rays.
