The New York Yankees after a win last night will hope to win two from the New York Mets today, in a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Last night, the Yankees broke a seven-game losing streak, powered by a homer from Luke Voit and the perfect pitching performance of J.A. Happ, who pitched 7.1 scoreless innings for the Yankees 2-1 win. With that momentum, the Yankees now hope to sweep a doubleheader in the Bronx.
With Gerrit Cole, Masahiro Tanaka, Jordan Montgomery, and J.A. Happ unavailable due to recent pitching, and the injury to James Paxton, the Yankees have no one in the regular rotation to start either of today’s games. Manager Aaron Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake will have to be creative in trying to get wins today. It is assumed that Jonathan Loaisiga having pitched in one of the doubleheader games on Friday most likely can’t be used either. We may see the likes of Michael King, Deivi Garcia, and Clarke Schmidt make appearances in one game or the other.
Gerrit Cole, Masahiro Tanaka, and Jordan Montgomery are the scheduled starting pitchers for the New York Yankees games upcoming at the Stadium starting on Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Today will be wonderful weather for both games at the Stadium. The horrid humidity that was suffered last night, is gone. Game one temperature will be in the mid-’70s under partly cloudy skies that will turn totally sunny. Game one will be at 1:05 pm and although the game two time has not been released, the ESPN schedule shows it at 4:05 pm.  The first game will be televised on SNY, YES, and TBS. Both the ESPN and TBS broadcast will be out of market only.
In game one today, the New York Mets will send out the once ace of the Red Sox, Rick Porcello. Porcello has pitched quite poorly for the Mets this season. He is 1-4 with an ERA of 6.43. Porcello will try to right his season’s pitching, after losing three straight decisions. Porcello’s problem appears to be the poor changeup that he depends on to get ground outs.
The New York Yankees may have a tougher time with the game two starting pitcher, Seth Lugo. Lugo is 1-2 with a very low ERA of 2.03, and sixteen strikeouts in ten games. Lugo is not a starting pitcher. The Mets did use him as a starter in his last outing, and he was dominant in his three innings pitched against the Miami Marlins. The only problem the Mets might experience with Lugo is that he is not stretched out. His longest outing of the season was the 39 pitches he used against the Marlins, he did record five strikeouts in the game.
The Yankees without much pitching, really need to win both of these games so that they can turn their fortunes around, as they attempt to regain the lead in the AL East. The Yankees have a better chance of getting more hits with the return last night of injured second baseman DJ LeMahieu. Although he was not instrumental in the win last night, he did record a long triple in the game. It is also possible that Zack Britton may return to the bullpen today as well.
The Yankees will be playing today without slugger Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gleyber Torres, all of which are on the IL. They will have to rely on the power of Luke Voit who has slammed seven home runs in his last ten games. Voit presently leads the Yankees in home runs (12). Voit has a .308 batting average and an unbelievable OPS of 1.102. If Voit continues his present play he will most likely be the teams 2020 MVP.
