Multiple New York Yankees players would be hit hard by the newest financial proposal:

With New York and New Jersey allowing sports once again, baseball could return in the near future. However, contract negotiations between team owners and players have hit a wall, as the league continues to propose awful suggestions regarding the players’ salaries.

The MLB continues to request a revenue-sharing deal, which would cut down high paid athletes significantly in 2020. In an 82 game season, a player like Gerrit Cole, who signed a massive nine-year, $324 million deal with the New York Yankees this off-season, would be hit hard.

For example, Cole is scheduled to earn $36 million in 2020, and under the revised terms proposed by team owners, he would make just $8-9 million, about 25% of his original salary. Players would essentially be paid on a prorated basis, or per game. Taking a 50% pay cut makes sense, considering there haven’t been any games, but players taking the significant brunt of the financial hit is unacceptable. Team owners must forfeit more money and come to a conclusion where it is equal, as the tiered pay cuts become more significant with high priced players.

Essentially, the lower-income players wouldn’t be forced to give up much in terms of money, but players like Cole and Mike Trout would be on the hook for nearly $18 million.

The Yankees have a bevy of players who would enter significant pay cut zones, including Giancarlo Stanton, Masahiro Tanaka, J.A. Happ, and Aroldis Chapman. It is clear that the players will reject this new proposal, and if things can’t get sorted out in due time, the entire season could be lost. With baseball already losing fans every year, this would be a significant blow to the sport in general.

Hopefully, the two sides can come to a conclusion in the coming weeks with an early July start-date.
