The New York Yankees overcame the Baltimore Orioles in game one of a doubleheader on Friday but fell in game two 6–3. Ultimately, their offense went cold in the second game, totaling just four hits over 26 at-bats. With DJ LeMahieu sitting, the Yankees’ good luck halted to a stop. He was a pinch-hitter late in the game, but the Yankees were unable to revive themselves after blowing yet another lead.

Good news and bad news for the New York Yankees:

GOOD NEWS:

While some might say young pitcher Deivi Garcia struggled in his second outing as a major league pitcher, I actually think he looked quite good. Aside from one poor pitch that resulted in a home run, he held Baltimore in check until the fifth inning.

Having thrown just 75 pitches in his first outing against the Mets on August 30, manager Aaron Boone pushed him to 95 pitches in his second appearance. This was a bit too much for the youngster, as his arm started to give out toward the end, which tacked on an extra two runs. He did total six strikeouts and showed solid command throughout the night. With more experience under his belt, I believe García can be a staple in the Yankees’ starting rotation. Getting him as much action as possible this year should be a priority.

Offensively, back up catcher Erik Kratz was the only one that recorded more than one hit. He also drove in two of the Yankees’ three RBIs. It is safe to say, he is more reliable at the plate than Gary Sanchez, who struck out three times in the earlier win.

BAD NEWS:

The bad news, the Yankees snapped a 17 game win streak at Camden Yards, but it was without a majority of their top players. Sitting LeMahieu, and the injuries to Judge and Stanton were significant.

Slugger Luke Voit, who was unable to record a hit in the second game, looks completely burnt out. The Yankees dedicated the loss to two young pictures in Garcia and Clarke Schmidt, who lasted 1.1 innings and allowed two earned runs and three hits.

Once again, the relief pitching was unable to do their job adequately, putting the Yankees in a tough spot with the offense sputtering. Luckily, Gleyber Torres is on his way back and should provide a boost to the batting order.
