New York Yankees: Good news and bad news in rock-bottom loss to Blue Jays

New York Yankees, Jordan Montgomery

The New York Yankees are bad, there’s no other explanation for their struggles. Manager Aaron Boone simply can’t motivate his players and they have failed to produce anything short of inadequacy over the past few days. On a three-game losing streak, they took on the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night. After taking a 6-2 lead, Toronto put up 10 runs in the sixth inning, absolutely destroying every and any chance of the Yankees making a comeback and securing their 22nd win of the season.

Starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery lasted 3.1 innings, giving up two earned runs and six hits. The primary issue with the starters recently is their longevity. They have been unable to last five innings or more for the most part without giving up fewer than three runs. Even ace Gerrit Cole has been going through a cold streak, which is not normal for one of the best pitchers in the league.

FINAL SCORE: 12-7

Good news and bad news for the New York Yankees:

GOOD NEWS:

There’s only one piece of good news to extract from the Yankees’ loss for the Blue Jays on Monday. Offensively, they put up seven runs, which isn’t a terrible number. In fact, they were on their way to securing a win until the relief pitchers completely folded. Chad Green lasted just one out, giving up three runs and walking two batters. The Yankees then brought an Adam Ottavino to help close out the inning with the lead is still intact, and he gave up six runs including a grand slam. Both now have an ERA over 4.00 with Ottavino almost reaching 8.00.

Offensively, though, Luke Voit had two hits on the evening and Miguel Andujar is finally hitting the ball with more gusto. He has made some great contact lately, despite only recording one hit on the evening.

Positive injury news, Giancarlo Stanton is running and making his way back to form, but Aaron Judge still lags behind and could be out for the next several weeks. There’s a good possibility that Judge doesn’t even return during the regular season.

BAD NEWS:

The bad news, everything. Starting pitching has been bad, the relief pitching has been bad, and the offense has been terrible for the most part. The New York Yankees allowed 12 hits to the Blue Jays on Monday, including 11 earned runs and seven woks. In total, they only recorded four strikeouts.

Manager Aaron Boone undoubtedly has hands full and could be on the hot seat following this season after a tumultuous performance. Given the majority of his best players are injured or have been injured at some point during the campaign, the Yankees simply can’t go on without finding a scapegoat for their troubles.
