In the first game of the doubleheader, the New York Yankees dominated offensively. They really looked like they got back into the swing of things after getting shutout in the first game of the series. In that game, they looked dead and couldn’t put together enough hits to put up a run. It looked like they took a step back offensively. However, today was a lot different.

They ended up losing the second game of the doubleheader 5-3 but didn’t go down without a fight. In fact, they had more hits than the Rays. Now, a big chunk of those hits came in the last inning, but they kept creeping back into the game. DJ LeMahieu hit a two-run double and left it up to Aaron Judge. Judge then hit a ball which off the bat, looked like it had a good chance of leaving the park. However, it landed in Kevin Kiermaier’s glove on the left-center field warning track.

FINAL SCORE: 5-3

Your good and bad news for the New York Yankees after the win:

GOOD NEWS:

There were several things in the Yankees loss that made it seem better. For one, the Yankees were able to hit. Like I said in the beginning, the Yankees put up a good number of hits but weren’t able to string them together in one inning. This is a great sign because most of the players that played in the second game were in the lineup for the first. Still being able to hit after playing a whole game before that, is impressive.

The only Yankee starters that didn’t have a hit in the game were Stanton and Tauchman. Those are two players that had hits in the first game today. It goes to show how unlucky this loss was. Typically, if you have everyone in the lineup put up hits except for two batters and get more hits than the opponent, it’s going to result in a win.

The pitching wasn’t all that bad either. The pitchers that we saw today wouldn’t be pitchers that you would typically see in a big game. We saw Michael King, Luis Avilan, Albert Abreu (MLB Debut), and Ben Heller. Not your typical relievers. However, they were still able to hold the Rays to only five runs. If most players in the Yankees lineup didn’t already have a game under their belt today, who knows how this game could have played out.

BAD NEWS:

There was one thing that made this day stink. No, it’s not that the Yankees are now losing the series to the Rays. It’s that Giancarlo Stanton could have an injury that could potentially put him on the IL. After Luke Voit hit him in to score in the top of the fourth, Stanton never saw the field again. He was replaced by Mike Ford in his next at-bat and is now getting an MRI on his left hamstring. Personally, I don’t think it will be something that will hold him out for a long period of time, but it is another injury for Stanton. In a 60-game season, losing someone with his value is extremely crucial to the Yankees’ success this season.

That’s the biggest loss today, and it’s not even close.
