The New York Yankees were headed toward a victory over the New York Mets on Thursday evening in a makeup game, but closer Aroldis Chapman simply wanted to make things more interesting. In the ninth inning, Chapman gave up a JD Davis home run to dead centerfield, which tied the game. Just moments before, catcher Kyle Higashioka threw out Billy Hamilton trying to steal third base, which evidently would’ve been the game-winning run.

The Yankees finally sparked their offense, who hadn’t scored more than seven runs since they played the Mets almost a week ago. In fact, it was the second time they scored seven runs or more since their win against the Red Sox back on August 15.

However, their loss to the Mets is a testament to their struggles as of late. With the rain drizzling down in the top of the 10th inning, Pete Alonso smashed a game-winning homer to overcome a deficit.

FINAL SCORE: 9-7

Good news and bad news for the New York Yankees:

GOOD NEWS:

Offensively, the bottom half of the New York Yankees batting order had a solid outing. They combined for five hits and four runs scored, which is far better than their recent production would indicate. At the top of the order, things were a bit more tumultuous. Luke Voit recorded a two-run double in the second inning, but aside from that, they were relatively quiet on the night. Clint Frazier has come crashing back to earth offensively, currently sitting at a .273 batting average with two strikeouts on Thursday.

The good news really comes in the form of injury news. Starting shortstop Gleyber Torres is set to return over the weekend, which should provide a massive boost to the offense and get Tyler Wade out of the starting lineup.

“The Yankees expect to have Gleyber Torres back in the lineup on Saturday or Sunday at Baltimore. Giancarlo Stanton is still “a ways away,” so he won’t be in Baltimore, according to manager Aaron Boone.”

BAD NEWS:

Pitching wise, starter JA Happ had a poor outing, allowing eight hits and four earned runs. Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman both struggled, allowing three earned runs over two innings, giving the Mets an opportunity to fight their way back into the game. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Pete Alonso launched a solo shot to left field, giving the Mets a 9-7 victory.

More bad news you ask? Giancarlo Stanton is nowhere near returning to live action.
