The New York Yankees were criticized by some fans for failing to bring a pitcher or two into the fold prior to Monday’s trade deadline. They were said to be in on righties Lance Lynn, Kevin Gausman and even Mike Clevinger, not to mention lefties Robbie Ray and Mike Minor. They wound up empty-handed.
According to several reports, teams were insisting on several of the New York Yankees’ youngsters. They asked for pitcher Deivi Garcia and outfielder Clint Frazier a lot. As you know, Garcia impressed in his Sunday start by limiting the Mets to one unearned run in six innings, with six strikeouts and no walks.
According to NJ Advance Media, Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman wouldn’t commit to giving Garcia a rotation spot form here on out. However, he also didn’t rule it out. What it has become clear is that young Deivi is a desirable piece around the league, one that many teams would want in their pitching staff. Several clubs asked for him around the deadline.
“Not just recently,†Cashman said, “but going into last year’s deadline and prior, clearly there’s a lot of value with his age, his control years, his economic circumstances as we move forward.â€
The Yankees will have him start on Friday
For now, it has been confirmed that Garcia will start one of the New York Yankees’ games against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Will he stick around after that? Only Cashman and manager Aaron Boone know the answer.
“What I liked was the fact that he had commanded his pitches and was pounding that strike zone and was getting ahead of the hitters and it felt and looked really comfortable,†Cashman said about the strides he made. “You can have the physical ability, but then it being able to execute on a consistent basis your delivery and your pitch sequences and have your game plan and follow it, that’s a whole other level.â€
J.A. Happ has been a liability in the rotation and James Paxton is currently on the injured list with a left flexor strain. There is an opportunity for the young phenom. Will he take it?
