If you have been following baseball news the last few hours, you probably know that the Miami Marlins have named Kim Ng their new general manager. It is a truly historic move given that she now becomes the first female GM in North American men’s pro sports team. She has previously worked with several teams in her journey to where she is now, including the New York Yankees.

David Adler of MLB.com points out that the New York Yankees represented one of the most important steps in Ng’s career. In the Bronx, she was an assistant GM in 1998. At the time, she was the second woman to hold that position.
Brian Cashman, the Yankees’ current GM and the one who hired her back then, congratulated her for her new role as the GM of the Marlins. He said that she was “indispensable.”

Cashman said she was “indispensable” in the Yankees

“I was truly excited for Kim when I learned that she had been named general manager of the Miami Marlins,” Cashman said in a statement. “It is wonderful seeing people accomplish their stated goals, and this has been a dream of hers for as long as I’ve known her. As assistant general manager with the Yankees, she was indispensable to me when I first began my tenure as the GM. Kim was a tireless and dedicated executive back then, and in the ensuing years, she has ceaselessly added to her skill set to maximize her talent. She will provide the Marlins with vast experience and institutional knowledge along with a calm demeanor and an amazing ability to connect with others — all of which will serve her well in her new leadership role as head of baseball operations. I offer my congratulations to her and to the Marlins organization.”

With Ng as the GM of the Yankees, they won three consecutive World Series from 1998 to 2000, and went to another Fall Classic in 2001.

Derek Jeter, the star shortstop during those glory days, is the man that is giving her the opportunity to be the GM of the Marlins.
