Getting defensive: New York Yankees’ Clint Frazier says he never considered himself a bad outfielder

Since being called up to the New York Yankees‘ major league team last week, it’s fair to say that outfielder Clint Frazier has had a major impact with the bat. He is currently slashing .533/.563/1.133 with two homers and eight RBI in four games.

However, he also seems improved on the field. On Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, he looked good while fielding a soft liner in the first inning. That catch saved runs, as there were two runners on the bases.

The Yankees’ outfielder used his quickness to get to the ball and looked good in the process. Much has been said about Frazier’s struggles on the field, and the numbers don’t usually lie: he has a -9.1 UZR and -10 DRS in more than 700 innings over his career.

The Yankees are happy to see progress

Yet, he continues to work hard to improve in that department. Last year, he had several blunders on the field but through hard work and dedication, he is trying to leave them behind and focus on the future.

“I don’t know if I’ve proven everything yet,” Frazier said. “I’m not out there to be a Gold Glover. I’m just trying to just make the simple plays. I’m not saying that I can’t get to them. Those are plays that I should make.”

The Yankees’ thumper said, according to NJ.com, that he used the extended break this year to improve in several facets of his game, including his work with the glove.

“I obviously had a few mishaps last year, but I had long, long offseason and a long coronavirus offseason as well to make up for some stuff that happened last year,” Frazier explained. “But I never really looked at myself as a bad outfielder. I just had a couple bad plays.

“It was easy plays that I should make, and I’m happy that I’m making them this year.” The New York Yankees will surely take any improvements he can make.
