After a week that consisted of two days off, the New York Mets are getting set for a weekend series with their division opponent, the Miami Marlins. The Mets enter this series with a 61-37 record, a three-game winning streak, and a three-game lead on the Atlanta Braves. It will be important to build on the recent momentum created against the Marlins, who are five games under .500.
Injury updates
Starting with Jacob deGrom, he has joined the Mets down in Miami per multiple reports. He is set to make his first start of the 2022 season next week for the Mets.
Catcher James McCann went 1-for-3 and caught six innings last night in his first rehab assignment.
Relief pitcher Trevor May made a rehab appearance two nights ago. He pitched one inning, did give up a hit and run but also had a strikeout. May seems slated to make a return imminently.
Reliever Drew Smith was just placed on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain. The timing of May coming back shortly would be an ideal one for the Mets bullpen.

- Mets still a favorite to land game-changing free agent infielder

Latest surrounding the trade deadline
The Mets are coming off a move yesterday in which they acquired outfielder Tyler Naquin and left-handed relief pitcher Phillip Diehl. In the deal, the Mets parted with minor leaguers in right-handed pitcher Jose Acuna and second baseman Hector Rodriguez.
Now, the focus shifts to whether or not the Mets will make a big splash with a bat or reliever in the coming days. Adding a Wilson Contreras, J.D. Martinez, or Trey Mancini could give this batting order the boost it needs to get over the top. To bolster the bullpen with a David Robertson would be huge. To get both Contreras and Robertson in a deal with the Cubs would make for a fantastic haul. It will be fascinating to see if the Mets are able to execute any big moves over the next few days to improve their chances of winning a World Series.
Preview of Marlins series
The Mets will have Chris Bassitt going for them tonight. He will look to get his eighth win of the year. In terms of the lineup, recently-acquired designated-hitter Daniel Vogelbach is in the order against the 9-4 right-hander Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara enters this one with a 1.81 ERA, which ranks second in baseball. The Mets hitters will have their work cut out for them tonight.
Luis Guillmore gets the start at third in this one leading to Eduardo Escobar getting the night off. The Mets will need continued recent success from Pete Alonso, Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, and Mark Canha to keep the winning streak going. Lastly, hopefully, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil can start to get back on track.
