The New York Mets will honor one of the greatest players to ever play for their franchise on July 19.

Mets to retire David Wright’s jersey & induct him into franchise Hall-of-Fame

MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo and Bill Ladson reported that Mets legend David Wright will be given two prestigious honors by the franchise next summer, saying this:

“They will retire David Wright’s No. 5 and induct him into the Mets Hall of Fame during a July 19 ceremony at Citi Field, the club announced Monday. Wright will become the 10th individual to have his number retired by the Mets and the second, along with Tom Seaver, to enter the team’s Hall of Fame on the same day,” DiComo and Ladson wrote.

Wright is one of the most prolific Mets stars in history

Wright has his name plastered all over the Mets’ all-time leaderboards. He ranks No. 1 in plate appearances (6,872), hits (1,777), runs (949), RBIs (970) total bases (2,945), and doubles (390). Further, his 49.2 WAR ranks first among all Mets position players in franchise history.

The Virginia native was a seven-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove Award winner, and two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient in his career. He led New York to the playoffs twice, first reaching the National League Championship Series in 2006, where they fell to the St. Louis Cardinals in a hard-fought seven-game series, followed by a run to the World Series in 2015, where they were downed by the Kansas City Royals in five games.

Mets: Wright will join illustrious company on July 19

Wright was the face of the Mets from 2004 onward, along with Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and Carlos Delgado. New York would not have reached the heights that they did without his exceptional play and reliability throughout his 14-year run with the ball club.

Because of his sustained greatness and laundry list of franchise accomplishments, the 42-year-old will join 34 present inductees in the Mets Hall of Fame. His Jersey will also hang at Citi Field next to Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Willie Mays, Keith Hernandez, Jerry Koosman, Mike Piazza, Tom Seaver, Gil Hodges, and Casey Stengel, as well as the honorary retiree Jackie Robinson.
