The Brooklyn Cyclones named longtime St. John’s University coach Ed Blankmeyer their new manager on Monday. He takes over from Edgardo Alfonso, whose contract was not renewed after the 2019 season.

Blankmeyer coached the Red Storm for 24 seasons and has had a level of success that is eye-opening.

From MLB Mets beat reporter Anthony DiComo:

Blankmeyer, 65, coached more than 100 Major League players between his stops at St. John’s and at his alma mater, Seton Hall, where he helped recruit Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, Mo Vaughn and others. In 24 seasons at St. John’s, Blankmeyer went 829-500-4, winning six Big East regular-season titles and five conference tournament championships, while earning 11 NCAA Tournament berths.

“Ed is a bit of a known commodity in this area,” Mets executive director of player development Jared Banner said. “He’s a well-respected coach and leader at the college level. A lot of accolades. A lot of great experience. He’s developed a lot of young players.”

This is a move by the Met that is in step with the initiative to restructure their farm system. This offseason former Mets catcher Brian Schneider will take over for Tony DeFrancesco at Triple-A Syracuse. DeFrancesco has been promoted to the become the Mets’ first base coach under new manager Carlos Beltran.

Up in  AA Binghamton, Lorenzo Bundy will replace Kevin Boles, whois now the Mets’ Minor League field coordinator.
