Can Marcus Morris be the catalyst behind a successful New York Knicks team next season?

The New York Knicks spent a majority of their available cap-space on veteran free agents, despite losing out on superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

While they won’t feature some of the NBA’s top talent in 2019, they gained several key pieces that could help them contend for a playoff spot. Ultimately, it comes down to the youth players and if they can produce far more than in 2018.

Earning just 17 total wins, they will need to be in the 40-win range to even be considered for a playoff spot. Who on the Knicks will represent that extra bit of quality to push them over the edge? Julius Randle, perhaps, or maybe one of the youngsters — RJ Barrett or Kevin Knox?

I believe it will be Marcus Morris, a savvy veteran who has the talent and experience to not only produce from himself but to help others as well.

Marcus was an integral part of Boston’s team last season, recording career bests in rebounds (6.1) and three-point field goals made (146) while averaging double-figured in points-per-game. He started 53 games in 75 appearances for Boston, averaging 13.9 points and 1.5 assists over 27.9 minutes.

Morris can play both the power forward and small forward positions, giving him a bit of diversity in how head coach David Fizdale can utilize his talent.

I imagine him being a great mentor for players like Knox and Barrett while proving his worth on the court. He spurred the San Antonio Spurs on a two-year deal in favor of a one-year, $15 million deal with the Knicks. An interesting move by Morris, who clearly prefers the extreme weather of the East Coast. It was reported that the Clippers were offering him a $41 million deal, so it’s hard to believe the money played the largest factor, which was seemingly why the Knicks convinced him to come to Madison Square Garden.

Nonetheless, he brings plenty of tangibles traits to a team that lacked a true veteran. His influence will be significant during the 2019-20 season.
