I was very energetic last week following the blowout of the Raiders. Sunday, the New York Jets got embarrassed by an 0-10 team and gave them their first win. The loss gave me a sense of realism and something startled me. It took Sam Darnold saying something to Adam Gase for him to make a change. That right there made me ponder, is Adam Gase really a “brilliant offensive mind” towards QBs if he can’t even realize his own issues? Looking at recent events with Ryan Tannehill, it’s become evident to me. Adam Gase is not a QB whisperer.

Why Did Sam Have To Say Something?

Bill Belichick is a genius. His success can heavily be contributed to that but he also knows when to call a spade a spade. Adam Gase let this team fall to a 1-7 record before it took a second-year QB to finally say enough is enough. A good coach should know when something isn’t working and should change it or at least attempt to. However Gase kept hoping things would figure themselves out and they didn’t and instead, it drove the team into a laughing stock situation. Bill Belichick has had losing teams turn into Super Bowl winners, not because a player steps up but because he has the level-headedness to make a change when need be. Sam Darnold shouldn’t have had to step up, Gase should’ve realized the issues and talked to Darnold and corrected things.

Ryan Tannehill Succeeding Without Gase

Part of the reason Ryan Tannehill was shipped to Tennessee was that the Dolphins brass felt he was tied with Adam Gase and his struggles were his own and not directly correlated. He wasn’t given a chance to prove himself without Gase in Miami so he was traded. However startling it was when Tennessee gave up significant compensation for a backup QB, that decision looks great now. The Titans have won 5 of their last 6 games since Tannehill took the reigns. He’s resurrected their squad and put them in the thick of the playoff hunt. Tannehill now has a 113.9 Passer Rating, 1,602 Yards, 12 TDs & 4 INTs. Tannehill is a front runner for comeback player of the year as well. How can you really say he was the problem in Miami when he’s having so much success with the good coaching staff. Gase was evidently holding him back and that gives him a very bad look.

Although I don’t wanna rag too much on Gase, it’s so clear he’s an inconsistent head coach who lacks the proven winning ability that it’s so mind-boggling why Chris Johnson would GUARANTEE his job safety beyond 2020. At the very least no matter their play in the last quarter of the season, the Jets brass should reconsider his return.
