Why trading for a wide receiver makes little sense for the New York Giants

Should the New York Giants inquire about Stefon Diggs?

With Stefon Diggs hitting social media to express his desire to leave Minnesota and find a new beginning, the rumors mill is up in arms. The New York Giants are likely not considering a trade for Diggs, who has been inconsistent with the Vikings, mainly due to Kirk Cousins’ problematic 2018-19 season.

The Giants currently have Darius Slayton, Golden Tate, and Sterling Shepard, three quality pass-catchers who can make a difference on the offensive side of the ball.

Slayton, who led the Giants in yards (740) in 2019 and touchdowns (8), is set to continue his impressive development in 2020. Hopefully, his chemistry with Daniel Jones can improve, and Big Blue can enjoy the fruits of their labor.

As for Shepard, he dealt with multiple concussions last season, failing to return to the field after week 10. Having him at full capacity is essential for Jones, who needs a quality slot option to pair with Tate, who worked outside of the numbers for a fair portion of the year.

Tate was one of Jones’ more reliable targets, despite having his worst season in the drop category. His 57.6% catch rate was the lowest its been since his rookie campaign in 2010. The expectation is that the number will improve to his usual success rate in year two with Big Blue.

If the Giants are going to bring in a new wide receiver, it likely won’t be through a trade. Probability would indicate that a WR-heavy draft makes more sense if Dave Gettleman is looking to add a pass catcher. Pay no mind to the Stefon Diggs rumors.
