One of the fastest collegiate athletes ever seen on a football field is none other than Tavon Austin, who’s highlights should be engraved into the history books. However, his translation into the NFL hasn’t been what most expected. Over seven seasons, he’s never broken 1,000 yards receiving, let alone 510 yards. Despite his inefficiency, Austin is a talented return man who could be useful for a New York Giants team that has lacked in the area for quite some time.
The Giants attempted to utilize Jabrill Peppers as a punt returner in 2019, but that idea went sideways as he injured his hip and was forced out for the remainder of the 2019 campaign. Bringing in a specific player to handle those duties makes sense, and Austin represents a talented option to fill the role.
Austin was formerly a first-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams and spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. New offensive coordinator for the Giants, Jason Garrett, is familiar with Austin, who’s electrifying speed could be useful for Big Blue.
How would Tavon Austin help the New York Giants:
The addition of Austin would not only help the return game, but the offense could use a receiver with elite speed. Currently, the Giants have Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate, and Darius Slayton, as their primary trio of pass-catchers, and Austin would be a cheap signing with a moderate ceiling.
Just Austin’s presence alone can make a big difference in offensive game planning and distracting defenses. I feel as though this move would be a low-cost decision that could pay dividends. Primarily, though, Austin’s return abilities can be utilized frequently, especially on a unit that has steadily improved every year. Having quality gunners and blockers on the punt team would open up a ton of potential for Austin in 2020 if he’s given a chance with the Giants.
