New York Giants: Why Dwayne Haskins Makes The Most Sense For Big Blue

Could the New York Giants draft Dwayne Haskins with the No. 6 overall pick?

The New York Giants are currently in a situation where they need to find a suitable successor for veteran quarterback Eli Manning. Whether it be a free agent or draft pick is yet to be seen, but Ohio State star signal-caller Dwayne Haskins currently leads the pack.

Haskins has been mocked to the Giants over and over, but why? And what makes him so special?

The 2019 NFL draft class is rather slim in regards to quality/proven talent. Haskins realistically only had one stellar season, which is his primary red flag – a lack of consistency is worrisome, but the 6-3, 220-pound quarterback improved in every game as the season progressed last year.

He’s arguably the best passer option on the board, and it’s expected that he will go in the top 10 picks with ease. Only starting 14 games at Ohio State only provides so much data to work off of, but what he did in those games was nothing short of jaw-dropping.

The New York Giants could run into problems on draft day:

The star passer tossed 50 touchdown passes and threw only eight interceptions. A concern heading into the draft will be the potential for a team to jump in front of the Giants to grab the best QB on the board. General manager Dave Gettleman spent the team’s third-rounder on a supplemental draft pick Sam Beal in 2018. This restricts what the Giants can do to potentially move up a spot to ensure they grab their guy.

If the Giants are forced to move up, they will need to part with their second-round, which will keep the Giants out of the draft until day 3.

At the end of the day, the probability that Haskins falls into the Giants’ lap naturally is unlikely. With the future of the team in question at the most important position on the field, it’s essential the Giants do whatever it takes to land Haskins. Waiting until 2020 seems to be too much of a liability at this point.

Comparing the two situations — they can either refine Haskins behind Manning for a year, which makes the most sense in terms of readiness and development, or they can hedge their bets on another bad season and draft an NFL ready option.

I pick the first option, what do you think? Leave a comment below!
