Perspectives have varying angles and mental algorithms, but sometimes it’s important to think realistically rather than include your own biases. The New York Giants have endured what most like to call a “rebuild” and what others might refer to as a “rejuvenation.”

The Giants’ new regime has provided an influx of talent and security in regard to the best players on the team – Odell Beckham Jr., Saquon Barkley, Nate Solder…the list goes on. Draft picks were spent and money was allocated in free agency to sure up many of the holes on both sides of the ball.

A realistic perspective of the New York Giants:

When looking at the team from an outside perspective it might look like the Giants are ready to compete now, but in reality, the foundation is just being built. General manager Dave Gettleman has made it a priority to rearrange the roster to fit his wants and needs. Providing depth at the linebacker and defensive line position has been a priority, as well as putting the best available players in a position to start in the coming season.

We are only several days from the beginning of a new Giants era. One that sees the team battle until the dying moments of a game, rather than give up when half-time strikes. I’ve witnessed a team that starts off slow but picks up momentum and strength as the game goes on. While the preseason offers little value, especially after the vast amount of cuts and moves made afterward, it’s still influential in witnessing how the game will be managed.

Realistically, the Giants are one full season away from being legitimate contenders. Some will disagree and say they’re in a win-now mode, which they are, but it’s important to realize that the new faces on the team will need time to adapt. A majority of the depth was cut right after the final preseason game, and the new additions will need several weeks to provide true value. The chemistry of the offensive and defensive players will require time to build and develop. The offensive line will need time to gel and act as a cohesive unit. The Giants are a work in progress, which is a major step forward from the 2017 season, and quite frankly, since the 2012 Super Bowl win.

The trend here is “time.” Ensuring the roster comes together smoothly and efficiently is the most important aspect of the overhaul. Now, this doesn’t mean it’s impossible for the team to make a run at the playoffs or even contend, but it’s just unlikely. An 8-8 record would be a huge success given the strength of the schedule and youth on the roster.

The bottom line, temper your expectations, but remain cautiously optimistic. Success is on the horizon, but we must give the front office time to water the seed they have planted and watch it grow into a towering oak tree.
