With the start of free agency coming along in the NFL, the New York Giants have come out ahead of the ball, ensuring they keep the pieces that contributed to their limited success in 2018.
One of those pieces was tight end Scott Simonson:
Simonson has signed a one-year deal following a productive season where he played in all 16 games with four starts and nine completed catches. The journeyman tight end began his career with the Oakland Raiders in 2014, only recording one catch in four seasons.
The New York Giants could release another tight end on the team:
The Giants taking this route could indicate the potential release of Rhett Ellison who will take up $5.75 million in cap space. If released, the Giants would save about $2.25 million. While those numbers don’t add up to much in savings, Big Blue doesn’t have much room to work with in terms of free agency money.
The Giants will have about $27.42 million in space to make moves this free agency period, about $9 million less than the league average.
With that being said, the cutting of Ellison is surely a possibility, as Simonson has a similar build and skill-set with a much cheaper contract.
