The New York Giants have started off 2020 with a bang, and by bang, I mean hiring people that nobody has ever heard of. Sometimes, that can be an advantageous thing, but in the NFL, it can be worrisome.
After new head coach Joe Judge hired Patrick Graham, an outgoing leader style coach to be his defensive coordinator, he didn’t hesitate to hire another unknown name, Jerry Schuplinski.
Schuplinski was the assistant quarterback’s coach on Brian Flores’ first Dolphins staff, and having worked with Graham, the connection makes sense, but what makes him so impressive?
The new Giants’ QB coach spent years with Judge and the New England Patriots, learning the ways of Tom Brady, the fundamental king. Judge made it apparent that the team would be tough and focus on the intricate details, and Schuplinski fits the bill perfectly in that facet.

“But with a little digging, it is revealed that Schuplinski’s best work may not have been with Tom Brady — it may have been with former back-ups Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett,” one quote says regarding Schuplinski. Both quarterbacks have evolved into starting level players in the NFL, which advocated for his abilities behind the scenes.

During training camp practices this summer, Schuplinski would often pull Brissett aside for an entire practice period or longer, and the two would stand in the middle of the field to talk. They discussed situations and tried to get Brissett to visualize things. At times, they’d welcome in a few of Brissett’s teammates to help him grasp a particular concept, but these were more teaching sessions than periods focused on physical execution.

“Jerry’s spent a lot of time with Jacoby,” Belichick said. “Josh obviously spends a lot of time with all the quarterbacks, but again there’s times where Tom or Jimmy was going to be the starting quarterback, sometimes the second quarterback — whether that was Jimmy a couple of years ago or last year, or Jacoby this year — is on a little bit different scale in terms of their preparation.”
