The New York Giants are 2-10 with another tough game coming up on the schedule, a Monday Night showdown on the road with the division rival Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants are on a long losing streak, and the team has shown no signs that the streak will end anytime soon.
Giants fans are fed up. They are sick and tired of all the losing. Big Blue has not had a winning season since 2016. The fanbase’s patience is running thin, and fans are growing particularly impatient with the team’s head coach. Giants fans are pleading for their team’s owners to step in and fire head coach Pat Shurmur.
Shurmur’s Seat Is Heating Up
According to NBC’s Mike Florio, Giants fans might get their wish. Florio claims that head coach Pat Shurmur “seems to sense what’s coming.” What might be coming is Shurmur’s firing. According to Florio, there are “whispers around the league” that seem to confirm this.
The Giants are 2-10 and coming off of their 8th straight loss. It is reasonable to believe that Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch’s collective patience is running thin. The Giants have won only seven games with Pat Shurmur since the beginning of the 2018 season, making their record 7-21.
Shurmur’s Lousy Career Record
Pat Shurmur noted yesterday in his postgame press conference that he is coaching a “historically young” football team. This statement could have been a slight at Giants’ general manager Dave Gettleman. There have not been any rumors yet as to whether or not the Giants would consider making a change at GM, too, but at this point, we can assume that anything is on the table.
Pat Shurmur has a historically lousy career head coach record. His career record is 17-44, a .279 winning percentage. This is the 7th worst winning percentage amongst head coaches in NFL history.
Dark Times For A Historic Franchise
The Giants’ 2019 team is one of the worst in franchise history. For the first time in their entire 94 year history, the Giants went winless in the months of October and November.
The New York Giants’ 8 game losing streak is the longest active streak in the NFL right now since the Cincinnati Bengals won their first game on Sunday to improve their record to 1-11. With four games left on the schedule, Pat Shurmur will need to turn it around to save his job. He cannot afford to let the team sink to 2-14 and a 12 game losing streak.Â
Firing Pat Shurmur would mean firing two head coaches in a span of four years. This is a dark time for the New York Giants. But if ownership believes that firing Shurmur gives the team the best chance to get back to their winning ways, then it is a necessary action.
