Good Morning, New York Giants Fans!

With the New York Giants sitting at 3-11 on the season without a playoff hope in sight, the expectation is that ownership will consider firing head coach Pat Shurmur, who has made continuous time management mistakes and personnel errors during live-games.

If Shurmur is fired, GM Dave Gettleman will be tasked with finding a replacement.

Here are three options the New York Giants should consider:

1.) Matt Rhule

Rhule has a bit of experience with the Giants, spending 2012 as an assistant to the offensive line coach. Rhule went back to Temple after his short stint with Big Blue, as he spent the six previous years at the University. He was the head coach from 2013-2016, before elevating to Baylor, where he has resurrected their program.

His resume as a college coach is quite impressive:

  • 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year
  • 2016 AAC Champion
  • 2019 Big 12 runner-up
  • 2x AAC runner-up
  • 47-42 overall record

Last season with Baylor, Rhule carried his team to the Big 12 Championship Game, which they lost in overtime. He has a bid for the Sugar Bowl this year and has been rumored to be a candidate for NFL teams.

2.) Jim Harbaugh

Harbaugh is another solid option who’s the current coach of the Michigan Wolverines. It isn’t probable that he takes his talents back to the NFL anytime soon after coaching for the San Francisco 49ers several years ago. However, it’s possible if a team comes calling with enough promise and money, Harbaugh could be lured back to the professionals. If the Giants are looking to replace Shurmur, bringing in a proven option that can handle the workload of leading a team should be a priority. Harbaugh fits the bill.

3.) Ron Rivera

Another established coach in the NFL is Ron Rivera, who enjoyed several years of success with the Carolina Panthers before Cam Newton deteriorated in front of our eyes. He saw the Panthers to three consecutive NFC South Division Championship games between 2014-2016.

Rivera has tremendous experience and is tied in closely with Dave Gettleman. This is a match made in heaven for John Mara, but maybe not the fan-base.
