Ever since the New York Giants watched Saquon Barkley go down in a heap and grimace in extreme pain, the offense has failed to operate at a high level. After two consecutive games of over 100+ yards rushing against two top defenses in the form of the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills, Barkley has failed to top 72-yards rushing on the season.
Just three weeks ago, Barkley recorded one-yard on 13 carries against the lowly Jets, a game that saw the ‘other’ New York team get back on track after a tough start to the season.
However, head coach Pat Shurmur has noticed Barkley’s struggles this year and commented on what he’s going through.
“I think he’s a young player, and he’s grinding through the season,’’ coach Pat Shurmur said, per the NY Post. “A lot of things went well for him last year, and he’s grinding through this season. I think there’s a lot to be learned from that. We all grind through it. At times, it’s about perseverance and trying to get it right until you can push it over the top and win consistently. That’s where we’re at right now.’’
Having missed three games with a high ankle sprain, Barkley insists that the injury hasn’t hindered his performances, despite the apparent avoidance of relying on his right ankle in pass protection. Barkley holds himself to an incredibly high standard, and having an off season isn’t a suitable excuse for the former Offensive Rookie of the Year.
“I don’t look at it that way, but he’s not lying,’’ Barkley said of Shurmur’s assertion. “I’m only 22, in my second year. You have to hold yourself to a standard and hold yourself to higher expectations. That’s how I am and that’s how I’m going to continue to be. Even though you face adversity or the season isn’t going how you want, as a team you have to keep working.’’
