New York Giants Might Have Struck Gold With Exiled Wide Receiver

Hand injuries can often times derail the career of any wide receiver, but former Brown, Corey Coleman, has made a statement in his time with the New York Giants so far.

Despite not earning a ton of reps as a pass-catcher, simply due to Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, and Bennie Fowler’s familiarity with the offensive playbook, Coleman has made an immediate impact.

In the Giants’ victory over the San Francisco 49ers, Coleman earned himself a compliment from head coach Pat Shurmur and some well-deserved recognition from the fan-base. He recorded his first catch as a Giants with three defenders close-by, snagging a pass that was zipping through a tight window. He also returned three kickoffs for 92 yards, which doesn’t even include a 43-yard return that was negated by a penalty.

Coleman has been an instant revelation for the return team, but has also provided value as a reserve wide-out that can make a play when called upon.

Pat Shurmur spoke about Corey Coleman in regard to his playing time, according to ESPN:

“He’ll get in. He’s a very talented young man,” Shurmur said. “I’ve gained a fast appreciation of him. He’s very energetic. He’s really into it. He’s trying to learn everything.”

After not earning any reps in his debut with Big Blue, Coleman amassed just eight in the win last Monday. You know what they say, “slow and steady wins the race!” I believe that Coleman has a future with the Giants. He’s a talented receiver that can fill in due to injury and can even contribute as a legitimate starter given the opportunity.

Shepard and Coleman played together in high-school, in which Sterling commented:

“It’s great to see because the guy has kind of been through a lot these last couple months, kind of bounced around a couple times,” Shepard said. “He was able to get a shot and he capitalized on the opportunity. It’s always good to see guys come in and be able to make an impact, especially someone who has been through a lot like him.”

I would expect to see Fowler phased out of the passing game for the most part moving forward. He can play a role as a blocker on running plays but Coleman certainly offers a better target for quarterback Eli Manning.
