New York Giants: Matt Rhule could be off the table after recent reports

Before the search began for a new head coach and former New York Giants‘ Pat Shurmur was fired, the favorites were blasted out into the media in a frenzy. Ex-Carolina coach Ron Rivera was the clear preference, but he recently signed a five-year contract with the Washington Redskins.

After Rivera took his talents to D.C., Baylor’s Matt Rhule became the favorite to fill the coaching void the Giants had opened up. However, it’s possible his availability could be off the table.

According to ESPN, Rhule anticipates a return to Baylor, stating:

“I plan on that,” Rhule said. “I certainly think I will be.”

“One thing people don’t realize is coaches, we pick up our families,” Rhule said. “We rip them out of their homes. We rip them out of the places that they are. Sometimes you do that until you get to a point where you find happy. You shouldn’t mess with happy.”

“There’s a lot to accomplish at Baylor. And most importantly, it’s just each and every year, I want to put together a championship-caliber team. And I think we have a chance to be even better next year than we are this year. … More than money, it’s about the situation for my family.”

There’s still a chance the New York Giants could land him:

With the Giants reportedly being his “dream job,” the idea of Rhule interviewing isn’t out of the questions, but it’s a decision he must make with his family. Uprooting them from school and friends is a tumultuous task, but a chance at an NFL head coaching gig is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most, especially when the New York Football Giants come calling.

Considering Rhule is from New York and likely has extended family in the area, I wouldn’t Rhule (funny joke) out the possibility of him interviewing after Baylor’s Bowl Game.

Nonetheless, we will keep you updated on the coaching hunt.
