New York Giants’ Joe Judge provides updates and details from Friday’s scrimmage:
Without the availability of a preseason, the New York Giants have taken to intrasquad scrimmages as a supplement. With a ton of young players on the roster, ironing out the starters is a difficult process. New head coach Joe judge has a different approach than previous coaches of the past.
He started off his conference call on Sunday, detailing takeaways from the scrimmage. He stated that he was happy with the effort but that his players need to work on their game conditioning, according to Dan Salomon.
Not having the preseason will force players to work more during practice and take the scrimmages more seriously. It will undoubtedly have an effect on the regular season stamina early on.
Judge went on to state that injured linebacker Blake Martinez is “fully healed,” and he was a participant in practice on Sunday. This is great news following the injury to David Mayo. He will undergo surgery on his meniscus and will miss a minimum of three weeks.
As for his primary take away from the scrimmage, he mentioned his focus on penalties and turnovers. Those are two statistics that are incredibly important for the New York Giants — game management and keeping the ball in the hands of the offense. That is something the New England Patriots did exceptionally well in the past, controlling the flow of the game and their possession.

Pass rusher Lorenzo Carter also gained glowing reviews from Judge, who said he was a “high motor guy†and whoever is blocking him is in for a long ride. Carter had at least four sacks in Friday’s scrimmage, two against rookie tackle Andrew Thomas, one against tight end Levine Toilolo, and another against incumbent tackle Cam Fleming.
He had some positive words for the offense, stating that they did a solid job of stringing drives together, and he came out very encouraged. As for former undrafted free agent offensive lineman Nick Gates, he was impressed at his command at the center position. He also mentioned how hard Marc Colombo is coaching the line.
