The New York Giants are sitting at 2-7 on the season after another deafening loss to the Dallas Cowboys at home last Monday. After a strong start to the game, the Giants lost their wits and motivation, falling 37-18. At half time, the score was close (16-12), with Dallas extending the lead on a Daniel Jones interception that resulted in last-second points.
The interception was justified, as Jones was trying to make a play to put his team in a better position, considering they would receive the ball at the start of the third quarter. However, the field position Dallas gained from the turnover allowed them to secure three points to increase their lead.
The fourth-quarter is where everything fell apart, as the Giants allowed three touchdowns, two of which were on plays over 40-yards, exposing the secondary and defensive miscommunications. Head coach Pat Shurmur held a meeting for the team that put everyone on the line.
The New York Giants need to change a culture:
The Giants have been the laughing stock of the NFL for years now, and Shurmur has done nothing to flip that chapter in the illustrious book of Big Blue. His enraged mindset must be trickling down from the executives above, who cannot sit idly by and watch their team’s mismanagement once more. Lack of discipline on the field, no offensive creativity, lousy time management, the list of negatives can continue forever.
Shurmur mentioned the excuses that he tries to avoid in the face of adversity:
“When you talk about youth, when you talk about injuries and when you talk about officiating those are all excuses in my mind that you just don’t go there,†Shurmur said before Thursday’s practice. “For me, it’s an urgency to win games. That’s what it’s about.â€
In theory, Shurmur refuses to justify the quality of his team with the excuses mentioned, but those are his words, not mine. Those are the factors he’s considering when game-planning and breaking down losses.
The Giants will face off against the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon, in what will be a battle at the bottom. Whichever team loses could ultimately see their head coach removed. While I don’t believe Shurmur will be fired, you can certainly justify the decision.
