New York Giants Head Coach Claims No One Is Eliminated From 53 Man Roster Chase Yet

The New York Giants have an advantage that some other teams in the NFL don’t at the moment, as the preseason comes to a close this week and the regular season nears not much long after – while the Giants don’t have very many superstar caliber players this year, the team does have a lot of players who are at least good enough to avoid wasting a roster spot. As the season approaches, in fact, it’s not clear who will make the team and who won’t.

The Giants need to cut the roster down to 53 players – although Golden Tate starting the season off the active roster with a suspension means that at least one player that wouldn’t otherwise normally make the 53 man roster will get a chance to come in and compete for at least four games, and possibly impress the team in the regular season enough to change their decision.

But it’s still not clear which players will be cut at the end of training camp. According to Pat Shurmur, the competition is still open as of now, during the buildup to the team’s last preseason game, against the New England Patriots.

“Right now, we really don’t have a depth chart, so I wouldn’t say who’s at the bottom of the roster. I will say this. We sort of know who’s at the top of the roster. Everybody beyond that, and especially all of the guys that play in Thursday’s game, certainly have a chance to impress us in a way where they can make our football team,” stated Shurmur.

“I think that’s still where we’re at roster wise. We have a lot of guys competing for the 53 spots.”

There’s a few positions of note and cornerback is one of them. Sam Beal should be in a competition with Deandre Baker but thanks to another injury, there’s still questions as to whether or not Beal will play in the final preseason game – the answer to that could help decide the balance of playing time at the position in week one.

At quarterback, Kyle Lauletta will be fighting to keep a spot after being upstaged this season by the team drafting Daniel Jones. With the team not finding a trade partner, Lauletta might just end up on the cut list.

There’s other position battles too, of course, and according to Shurmur, those aren’t over just yet. With plenty of players competing for spots on the final roster, the Giants can say that while they aren’t the best team in terms of raw talent, they do have more options than some others.
