When most think of the more influential players on the defensive side of the ball, an edge rusher or cornerback usually come to mind. For the New York Giants, it could be an interior defender, specifically Clemson product Dexter Lawrence.

Lawrence is coming off a National Championship victory and was considered one of the most dominant interior lineman in college football. The Giants snagged him with their 17th overall pick, one of the first-rounders gained in the Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

What can Dexter Lawrence do for the New York Giants?

The 6-foot-4, 342-pound lineman has speed, agility, and fundamental moves. Everyone wanted to see the big body showcase his skills with full pads on, and he certainly put on a display of power and speed. The way he clogged the trenches and took up massive amounts of space put a smile on defense coordinator, James Bettcher.

The Giants finished 2018 with ranked 20th in rush yards per game (118.6). Facing off against one of the league’s premier running back’s in Saquon Barkley will allow him to elevate his game and perform better against other backs during the regular season.

However, Dexter isn’t only considered a run-stopper, he is also capable of rushing the passer. While his numbers from college don’t reflect his abilities as a pass-rusher, he has the skill-set and moves to get after the quarterback. At his size, it will be difficult for a single offensive lineman to stop him.

I anticipate offenses double-teaming Lawrence in an attempt to stop his bull rush. Consider the fact that Vince Wilfork, one of the best interior linemen to every step on a football field, stood at 6-foot-2, 325-pounds, it provides optimism for Lawrence moving forward.

The athleticism he has with his size is unparalleled and will be an advantage he will look to utilize during the regular season.
