The New York Giants defense is suffering from injuries. The team’s two starting edge rushers have been injured since the preseason and are unable to suit up for Big Blue’s first games of the 2022 regular season. Additionally, starting cornerback Aaron Robinson had his appendix removed, meaning he will also be out on Sunday. Thankfully, though, the Giants’ primary starting cornerback, Adoree’ Jackson, has been playing at an elite level, keeping the defense together.
Adoree’ Jackson has been playing at an elite level for the Giants
The New York Giants secured a huge victory to start their season over the Tennessee Titans last Sunday. Tennessee struggled offensively as Wink Martindale’s defensive scheme slowed down Derrick Henry while also keeping the Titans’ wide receivers in check. Tennessee’s leading receiver only totaled 66 yards.
The Giants enjoyed a top-tier coverage performance out of their primary cornerback, Adoree’ Jackson. New York signed Adoree’ last offseason to a three-year, $39 million deal. Jackson was signed to be the team’s CB2, but the departure of James Bradberry this offseason thrust Adoree’ Jackson into the top spot. Jackson has handled the new responsibilities well thus far, allowing only two completions on six targets for 40 yards against the Titans.
Adoree’ Jackson went overlooked last season. The glitz and glamor of James Bradberry overshadowed the talent that Jackson was playing with on the opposite side of the field. In his last nine games with the Giants, Adoree’ Jackson has been playing at an elite level. He has logged 338 coverage snaps in that time span, allowing only 13 catches on 32 targets (40.6% catch rate) for 97 yards (3.0 yards per target) and one touchdown. Jackson has also nabbed one interception and four pass breakups.
The New York Giants secondary is finding itself in a tricky situation with injuries and a lack of depth creating question marks at cornerback. However, Adoree’ Jackson has been a constant bright spot for the defense. The Giants will need Jackson to continue his elite level of play against the Carolina Panthers in order to come away with a victory in Week Two.
