New York Giants: A full projected 53-man roster for the 2020 season

New York Giants, Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley

With roster cuts set to be final at 4 PM on Saturday for the New York Giants and the remainder of NFL teams, tough decisions loom for management. There have been some stellar performances this training camp for the Giants, especially on the back-end of the roster in the wide receivers room. Players like Austin Mack, David Sills, and Alex Bachman have all had solid camps, but there simply aren’t enough roster spots to go around.

Let’s take a look at both sides of the ball for the New York Giants and who will be on the 53 man roster (projected):

QB: Jones, McCoy, Rush (3)

I believe management will carry three quarterbacks into the 2020 season as a precaution for any COVID-19 related issues. Having multiple options who can run the offense adequately is a necessity, especially in an estranged year.

RB: Barkley, Lewis, Gallman, Penny (4)

The running backs are quite straightforward, with Saquon Barkley, Dion Lewis, and Wayne Gallman the primary options. Having Elijah Penny as their full-back was valuable in 2019, and I believe he will remain in that role moving forward.

WR: Slayton, Shepard, Tate, Coleman, Bachman (5)

As for the wide receivers, Corey Coleman has had a fantastic camp and will certainly be on the 53 man roster. I believe Alex Bachman will claim the fifth spot, having spent the 2019 season on the Giants’ practice squad. Bachman has been a stellar option from the slot and is a great reminder of Cole Beasley for Jason Garrett in his previous offenses.

TE: Engram, Smith, Toilolo (3)

The tight ends are pretty straightforward as well, with Evan Engram, Kayden Smith, and Levine Toilolo presenting themselves as the top three options. I believe Garrett will utilize plenty of two tight and sets, and with Smith developing exponentially with his blocking and Engram looking like his best self, we could see some stellar performances from this group.

OT: Thomas, Fleming, Peart (3)

OG: Zeitler, Hernandez, Lemieux (3)

C: Gates, Halapio (2)

As for the offensive line, expected players will make the roster, but I believe the Giants will cut Spencer Pulley and save $2.75 million in cap space. They will replace him with a much cheaper Jon Halapio, who spent 2019 as a starter for a Big Blue before going down with another significant injury. He seemingly looked good during his tryouts, earning himself a spot on the roster.

ST: Gano, Dixon, Kreiter, Ebner (4)

The kicking group boils down to Graham Gano, who replaced Chandler Catanzaro midway through camp. Riley Dixon, one of the league’s best punters, remains in his spot, and the newly signed Casey Kreiter will man the long-snapper position. Special-teams connoisseur Nate Ebner is also a sure-fire roster player after the release of Michael Thomas following the 2019 season.

DL: Lawrence, Williams, Tomlinson, Johnson, Hill (5)

The defensive line for the Giants is pretty much set, except for one rotational spot that I believe Austin Johnson will fill. Dexter Lawrence, Delvin Tomlinson, Leonard Williams, and BJ Hill will surely be on the roster, but Johnson will take the place of RJ McIntosh, who struggled to gain his footing in the NFL since being drafted in 2018.

OLB: Ximines, Carter, Golden, Fackrell, Coughlin, Brown (6)

As for the pass rush and outside linebacker corps, Oshane Ximines, Lorenzo Carter, Markus Golden, Kyler Fackrell, Carter Coughlin, and Cam Brown will be the rotation there. While Coughlin has struggled to impress during camp, he has the physical traits to become a solid player in the NFL. I believe he is more of a situational pass rusher on passing downs, but if he can gain some size, he can develop into a more refined player. As for Brown, he is an athletic freak who simply can’t be passed on.

ILB: Martinez, Connelly, Mayo, Downs, Crowder (5)

Inside linebacker, Blake Martinez, Ryan Connelly, and David Mayo are cemented players. Former Minnesota Viking draft pick Devante Downs has had a stellar camp, and while he’s a bit big for a linebacker, he might start the season next to Blake Martinez due to injuries. Seventh-round pick and “Mr. Irrelevant” Tae Crowder will snag the last spot over TJ Brunson.

CB: Bradberry, Ryan, Holmes, Ballentine, Yiadom (5)

The cornerback room is definitely a big question for the Giants. Of course, James Bradberry, Logan Ryan, and Darnay Holmes will make the roster, but Corey Ballentine has struggled this camp, and they recently traded a seventh-round pick for Isaac Yiadom, formally of the Denver Broncos. Considering they traded a pick for him, I imagine he will make the roster, but given Ballentine’s upside, he will ultimately sneak in as well.

S: Peppers, Love, McKinney, Hartage, Jarren Williams (5)

At safety, I see Montray Hartage and Jarren Williams making the back end of the roster, and with Xavier McKinney out for at least 10 weeks of the regular season, they will need to carry an extra option as a precaution.

Surprise Cuts:

DL: RJ McIntosh

CB/S: Chris Williamson

LB: TJ Brunson

WR: David Sills

WR: Binjimen Victor

WR: Austin Mack
