How can the New York Giants land Chase Young in the 2020 NFL Draft?

The little hope that New York Giants have regarding a potential Chase Young draft selection at the 4th overall pick is still very much alive. As Isaiah Simmons and offensive tackle prospects plaster the headlines for Big Blue, crazier things have happened in the draft than Young falling three spots to Big Blue.

However, a miracle would have to occur for the star-studded pass rusher to fall beyond the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions. The Giants do have a glimmer of hope, especially after Washington’s new head coach, Ron Rivera stated that the team brought in quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Joe Burrow for formal interviews.

Rivera has not been shy to admit that his team is evaluating quarterbacks — after Dwayne Haskins reportedly didn’t understand the playbook for half of the 2019 season and was thought to be dyslexic, Rivera considering other passers is justified.

The New York Giants need a lot of luck to land Chase Young:

Even if Young slips past Washington, who theoretically takes Tua in this scenario, the Detroit Lions become the next in line to land the Ohio State standout. Still, they could opt to trade back with a QB-needy team like the Miami Dolphins or Los Angeles Chargers. Detroit is in desperate need of offensive line support and a playmaker at the cornerback position.

A lot has to go down for the Giants to land one of the premier players in the upcoming draft, but it would alleviate their pass-rush concerns immediately. Free agency holds Jadeveon Clowney as a potential option, but he will cost upwards of $22 million. The Giants currently have $77.8 million in available cap space, so they can afford to invest in a player like Clowney, but Young will be the cheaper and more long-term option.

However, if the Giants do sign Clowney and Young is on the board, they can solidify one of the best pass-rush tandems in the game overnight. This is optimistic in every sense, but the Giants are due for a good-luck break.
