The New York Giants saw their backup quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, suffer a rib injury in their recent game against the New York Jets. Although Taylor was promptly taken to the hospital, he was discharged the following Monday. Despite being sore, it seems unlikely that Taylor will return to the field in the near future.

Giants’ Adjustments: Jones and DeVito

With Daniel Jones cleared and set for a return against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9, the Giants made additional moves, elevating undrafted free-agent quarterback Tommy DeVito to the active roster.

Matt Barkley Joins the Practice Squad

To bolster their practice squad, the Giants brought in 33-year-old veteran Matt Barkley. A former fourth-round selection by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, Barkley has accumulated 2,699 career passing yards, accompanied by 11 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. His most notable stint as a starter came with the Chicago Bears in 2016, where he began six games, achieving 1,611 yards and eight touchdowns on a 59.7% completion rate.

While the Giants hope Barkley remains a backup without game action, his experience under Brian Daboll’s system—gained during a three-year tenure with the Buffalo Bills from 2018 to 2020—could be serviceable if called upon.
