In an unexpected turn, New York Giants QB Daniel Jones was named one of the NFL’s most clutch quarterbacks by CBS Sports’ Douglas Clawson. Ranking Jones eighth on the list of the league’s 10 most clutch QBs, Clawson gave his reasoning for the surprisingly high rank.
“He had very few clutch opportunities through three seasons but he’s been steady lately,” writes Clawson. “He successfully led the Giants down the field to tie or take the lead on 11 of 25 opportunities (44 percent) in the last two years, a top-10 rate in the NFL.”
Clawson believes Jones and Giants’ magical 2022 campaign was “a fluke” but still gives credit to the QB
Additionally, Clawson acknowledges Jones’ NFL-record five-game winning drives through the first seven games of the 2022 season, describing it as “a fluke.” Nonetheless, Clawson still credits Jones for his poise and composure in those moments, citing his game-winning drive in the 2022 NFC Wild Card game against the Minnesota Vikings.
“While he may not have been landing haymakers and Saquon Barkley was certainly doing his fair share of the heavy lifting, credit Jones for taking care of the ball and adding value with his legs,” said Clawson. “His five turnovers in the fourth-quarter and OT in the last two years is the same number as Joe Burrow. He also led a game-winning drive on the road in the postseason against the Vikings in 2022.”

Jones ranked higher than some of the NFL’s best talents at the quarterback position
Jones ranked ahead of Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert, and reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. Notably, Jones is the only NFC quarterback to defeat Jackson in his NFL career.
The Giants are hoping Jones can tap into his clutch gene once again in 2024. After a disappointing 6-11 season in 2023, the team has little expectations coming into next season. In 2022, Jones’ late-game heroics helped push the Giants into a surprise playoff team, could a repeat season be on the horizon?
