The New York Giants claimed a league-high six players off the waiver wire over the weekend and some of them could have a very positive impact. Ensuring the 2017 season doesn’t replicate itself is the first step to success, the second is cutting a majority of the players that contributed toward the 3-13 season.

Taking a look at how Edwards can influence the New York Giants’ defense:

To summarize, the Giants’ new regime overhauled the roster and have begun putting the necessary pieces in place to content as soon as possible. One player that will contribute towards that idea is former Raider defensive end Mario Edwards, who was waived as a part of roster cuts.

Edwards, 24, is still in his prime. He’s completed three seasons in the NFL after being selected in the second-round by the Raiders. He’s amassed 71 tackles and 5.5 sacks throughout his career. While those numbers aren’t eye-popping, his influence on the Giants might be more intriguing.

At 6-foot-3, 280 pounds, Edwards is a big for a defensive end. He can play tackle if need be, which is likely what the Giants will have him do. He has great upper body strength and can stand up offensive lineman on the line of scrimmage. This likely plays a factor in why James Bettcher thought he would be a solid addition.

This issue with Edwards is that he’s a less than adequate pass rusher. He provides more value as a DT. Having an emotional and inspiring coach like Bettcher should help Edwards refine his play and reach his potential.

Here’s a quote from his NFL Draft profile:

‘I think conditioning and desire are a big problem for him and they go hand in hand. He just looks content to stay blocked by lesser players, and it is so frustrating to watch because you know he has the talent to be so much better.” — AFC West scout
