Giants intrigued by Washington State offensive tackle as developmental prospect

Abraham Lucas

The New York Giants have a huge hole on their offensive line. New general manager Joe Schoen did his best to plug up the interior of the offensive line with low-cost free agency signings. Left tackle will continue to be held down by standout Andrew Thomas. But across the line at right tackle, the Giants are searching for a solution. Many predict that New York will spend a first-round pick on a right tackle, but Joe Schoen has made it clear that he believes offensive linemen can be found in any round of the draft. The Giants are scouting and meeting with tackle Abraham Lucas, a second-round prospect that could fit the bill for Big Blue.

What could Abraham Lucas bring to the Giants?

The Giants are intrigued by Washington State offensive tackle Abraham Lucas. New York is meeting with Abe Lucas for a top-30 visit, according to Jordan Raanan. Abraham Lucas is a great pass-protector that is looked at as a potential second-round draft option for the Giants.

Abraham Lucas is an exceptional athlete. Based on his testing at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, Abe scored a 9.72 RAS (relative athletic score) out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 34 out of 1175 OT from 1987 to 2022.

The 6-foot-6 tackle out of Washington State dominates defensive ends in pass protection. He ranks fourth in this class in the lowest pressure percentage allowed with screens, play-action and RPOs removed among 2022 NFL Draft OTs, per PFF at 2%. Lucas did not allow a single sack in the 2021 season. His 91.0 Pass-Blocking Grade also led all Pac-12 Tackles in 2021 (PFF).

One of the pros that Abraham Lucas has on the first-round offensive tackle prospects is his native position. Ikem Ekwonu, Charles Cross, and Evan Neal are all left tackles that would need to be converted to the right side by the Giants. But Abraham Lucas, on the other hand, spent his entire collegiate career playing right tackle. This could give Lucas the ability to make an impact as a starter in his first season.

The New York Giants are very likely to draft a tackle in round one. But if things do not go according to plan, then the Giants need secondary options. Abraham Lucas is a phenomenal second choice if the Giants decide to wait until round two to draft a tackle. Lucas needs refinement as a pass-protector before he competes at the NFL level. He also does not have a lot of experience as a run-blocker. But Abraham Lucas possesses all of the athletic traits necessary to be a starting offensive tackle. With some good coaching, the New York Giants could turn Abraham Lucas into a stud right tackle.
