Per SNY on X, in a recent press conference, Lock doubled down on statements he made earlier this spring about Daniel Jones being the surefire starter under center next season (h/t CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo):
“I wouldn’t say that,” Lock said of being the team’s most popular player. “I would say, I appreciate the people that respect my game and know what I can do. But you’re the backup, and you’re here to help Daniel.”

Ever since the Giants penned Lock to a deal on March 15, he’s been propped up as having a legitimate chance to unseat Jones as their new starting QB. Lock first came out and declared that Jones would be the starter, as was conveyed to him upon his arrival in New York.
Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider said that his former quarterback left town due to the Giants selling him on being able to challenge Jones for the starting nod. The 27-year-old played well in two spot starts last season, giving New York confidence that he could produce at such a level for a full season.
Lock is a capable QB that can give the Giants quality play as a starter or a backup
The Missouri native completed 68.75 percent of his passes for 477 passing yards with a 3-2 TD-INT ratio in 2023. He looked strong when given opportunities under Pete Carroll in Seattle.
No matter, Lock is still QB2, at least for now. His comments come under the air of the Giants refusing to express their devotion to the Duke product ahead of him in the depth chart for months after their season ended. Lock’s selfless attitude is likely to go a long way with head coach Brian Daboll and earn him time ahead of emergent QB Tommy DeVito should Jones get hurt or go through a slump next season.
