In Episode 30 of Fireside Giants, a New York Giants Podcast, Alex Wilson and Anthony Rivardo dive into Leonard Williams and the crazy amount of money he’s asking for.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, Williams is seeking $18-20 million after the 2020 season. The Giants placed the franchise tag on Williams, which will pay him $16.1 million as an interior defensive lineman.

Williams has been efficient in drawing double teams, but his sack totals are disappointing, earning just 0.5 sacks in 2019. He is three years removed from a 7.0 sack performance with the New York Jets.

Ultimately, Williams needs to step up and lead the defense in 2020. General manager Dave Gettleman spent a third-round pick on his services, as a rental. If they don’t extend him beyond 2020, utilization of that draft pick well have been for no reason, except for the malpractice effect of B.J. Hill’s development.

Alex and Anthony dive into his usage and if he is really that valuable for the Giants. They also take a look at Patrick Mahomes and his massive contract over 10 years.

Don’t miss this episode of Fireside Giants, which is also available on YouTube in video form. We relate Williams back to the secondary and how the defense will come together in the future. Of course, we give our facts of the day, heavily revolving around Dave Gettleman and his previous tenure with the Carolina Panthers.

A sneak peek: One negative comment against Gettleman was from D’Angelo Williams back in 2017. Williams called Gettleman a “snake” and that he would consider the possibility of returning to Carolina now that the current GM for the Giants was gone. Multiple other players also spoke out, which you can hear in the podcast. Notably, Josh Norman and Landon Collins both had tough words for Gettleman.
