Could the New York Giants Make a Surprise Move on Top Quarterback Draft Option?

The New York Giants wanted one final look at Oklahoma star Kyler Murray this week as the 2019 NFL Draft is just two weeks away. The rumors have quieted down and Josh Rosen seems to be all but stuck in a state of purgatory as the Arizona Cardinals have been linked to Murray with the No. 1 overall pick.

With a defensively heavy draft and several premier pass-rushers available in the top six picks, it’s expected that the Giants will take that route over a quarterback in an attempt to solidify the future beyond Eli Manning. However, the last second workout from Murray poses a few questions that are worth noting.

What makes Kyler Murray so exciting for the New York Giants:

Murray finished 2018 not only with the Heisman Trophy in hand but 4,361 yards through the air and 42 passing scores. In addition, he ran for an astounding 1001 yards and 12 touchdowns. Those numbers are intimidating and only promotes a drafting him.

Mixing him in with an offense consisting of Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate, Evan Engram, and a rebuilt offensive line makes even Cowboy fans tremble in their shoes. Increased RPOs, unpredictability, excitement, production, efficiency…you name it.

The Giants would likely have to trade up into the top three picks to snag Murray, though. A deal with the Jets could be possible as they have publically stated that they are willing to make a deal. I don’t expect the Giants to expend any draft capital on the mobile passer in a potential trade up, but if he falls all the way to No. 6, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled the trigger out of pure offensive potential.

At the NFL Combine, Murray stated in regard to potentially joining the Giants:

“I think me in that system, with those guys, can be very dangerous,’’ Murray said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “At the same time, I don’t get to choose where I go. If that was the case, I would love to be in that situation. Love to be in New York. At the end of the day, I don’t pick myself.’’

At the current moment, it seems as if general manager Dave Gettleman is keen on allocating capital towards the defense and finding his signal caller with the 17th pick. It’s impossible to know what they might do, so we can’t rule out any option as we close the gap on April 25th.
