Could the New York Giants kick the tires on A.J. Green in free agency?

When the New York Giants hired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett this offseason, they knew a big-bodied wide receiver might be in the future of the offense. The 2020 NFL Draft presents an excellent opportunity to find a pass-catcher in a deep draft class. However, it’s easy to underestimate how important a top receiver can be for a young quarterback.

The Giants currently have Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate, and Darius Slayton as their primary pass catchers, and none of them are considered No. 1 options for Jones. This is where A.J. Green enters the picture.

Should the New York Giants even consider A.J. Green?

Green missed all of 2019 with a foot injury, which will significantly lower his price-tag in free agency. With the Bengals having the 1st overall pick in the draft, they will undoubtedly select LSU quarterback, Joe Burrow, and providing him with a premier receiver will be essential. However, the Giants are in a position to also add Green to the roster on a friendly deal.

He might even be open to a one-year deal to prove his health with the end goal of seeking a multi-year contract. Spotrac has Green valued at $9.1 million per-season, and the Giants have ample cap-space to go out and sign him with ease. While Big Blue has other needs, specifically on the offensive line and pass-rusher units, they have the money to spend if they wish to bring in a top wideout.

Green has been relatively healthy throughout his career, aside from the last two seasons. While I don’t necessarily think the Giants need Green to bolster the offense, adding a player of that quality coming off an injury-riddled year should be cheaper and offer Jones a top pass-catcher to work with in his sophomore season. I do believe he should have more than enough talent to work with if they elect to stick with their leading trio and tight end Evan Engram. That’s not even factoring in Saquon Barkley, who’s essentially a receiver as well.
