While the New York Giants have spent the early spring scouring the NFL Draft for backfield reinforcements, the current cornerstone of their rushing attack just delivered the news Big Blue fans have been waiting for.

Cam Skattebo is recovering from an ankle dislocation that he suffered in Week 8 of his rookie season. The gruesome injury kept him sidelined for the remainder of the year. But Skattebo is making progress in his recovery, and recently delivered an overwhelmingly positive update.

Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show on Friday, Skattebo provided a definitive update on his recovery from the devastating injury that cut his rookie season short:

“I’ll be ready to go by training camp. Absolutely,” Skattebo told Eisen. “I’ve probably got a little bit over a month left until I’m fully back to 100%.”

In a month’s time, Skattebo will be back to hitting full speed. But, for now, his speed is severely limited — as he described in jest:

“I can get away from like a baby hippo, maybe,” Skattebo said this week of his recovery on The Rich Eisen Show. “That’s about it. But, yeah, a little bit over a jog. Just kind of striding out, not exploding yet and getting into that part of the game, but the jog and the striding.”

For a team that has invested heavily in Patrick Ricard to pave the way for a physical ground game, Skattebo’s clean bill of health is arguably their most significant “addition” of the offseason. Although he won’t be outrunning any mammals in the near term, in another month or so, he should be back in high gear.

Before the injury, Cam Skattebo was on pace for a 1,000-yard season. Skattebo quickly became the team’s preferred option inside the 10-yard line, leading all Giants running backs with 6 rushing touchdowns. Averaging 4.6 yards per carry is an impressive mark for a back whose primary role is high-traffic, between-the-tackles running.

The Giants are Building a Smash-Mouth Rushing Attack with Cam Skattebo in Mind

Cam Skattebo’s health is the linchpin for John Harbaugh’s vision of a smash-mouth offense in East Rutherford. Before the injury bug bit, Skattebo was a revelation, blending a bowling ball running style with surprising efficiency as a pass-catcher. His presence allows the Giants to dictate the tempo of the game, a philosophy that is central to protecting young quarterback Jaxson Dart and keeping the defense fresh.

His return to full strength minimizes the pressure on Tyrone Tracy Jr. to handle a heavy workload between the tackles, allowing Tracy to flourish in his role as a versatile playmaker. It also provides Joe Schoen with more clarity heading into the draft; while the team is still doing due diligence on prospects like Mike Washington Jr., they do not have to draft out of desperation to replace their primary early-down hammer.

Cam Skattebo: 2025 Rookie Statistics

The “one month” timeline mentioned to Eisen puts Skattebo on track to be cleared for full football activities by late April or early May, well ahead of the mandatory minicamp and the grueling heat of July camp.

This window is crucial for building chemistry with the new coaching staff and learning the nuances of Harbaugh’s new blocking assignments. If Skattebo can maintain his health through the summer, the Giants’ rushing attack is positioned to be one of the most statistically dominant units in the NFC this season.
