UFC: Nate Diaz continues calling out Dustin Poirier

The UFC is going to have to make a decision soon on what they want to do with Dustin Poirier (27-6, 1 NC). Poirier just knocked out Conor McGregor (22-5) and established himself as the best lightweight not named Khabib in the UFC.

He has said he’s the uncrowned champion which in reality is true assuming Khabib is retired. The Diamond has proven over the last few years that he’s one of the best fighters in the world.

He’s now in a position where he has a little control over what he wants to do next. Poirier has said that he will sit out unless the UFC gives him an opponent that he’s happy with. One of those opponents is Stockton’s Nate Diaz (20-12).

Diaz is one of the biggest superstars in the sport. He was also supposed to fight Dustin Poirier back at UFC 230, however, a Poirier injury caused the fight to be called off. Diaz said recently he was training to fight Poirier next.

Poirier has acknowledged that he wants to fight Nate Diaz even if it didn’t make sense. He told Ariel Helwani this week that a bout with Diaz would excite him. Diaz continued his callouts yesterday on Twitter.

Will the UFC book this matchup?

Dustin Poirier has said that he would let the UFC book another title fight if he’s not happy with his options. That could potentially open the door for him to move up to 170 pounds to fight Nate Diaz. Diaz’s recent callouts suggest he’s not wanting to go back to lightweight.

Poirier has said that he’s open to fighting at 170 pounds in the future. While the fight wouldn’t have any significance in terms of divisional standing, the fight would be a massive fight for fight fans.

I don’t think there are any UFC fans that would complain about a matchup between Diaz and Poirier. The UFC had their matchmaking meeting yesterday and one has to wonder if The Diamond was discussed. One thing we know for sure is that Poirier and Diaz are both down for that fight.
