UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo might be leaving the division

Back at UFC 270 in January, we saw the third installment of Deiveson Figueiredo (21-2-1) – Brandon Moreno (19-6-2). The fight was razor close, but in the end, Figueiredo was able to recapture the flyweight title by winning a decision.

Given how close the fight was and how the first fight went, everyone expected the UFC to book the fourth fight. In fact, Dana White openly said that’s what they were looking at. However, Figueiredo suffered an injury to his finger that is still preventing him from properly training.

Because he’s injured, the UFC has decided to create an interim title. Moreno will have a rematch with Kai Kara-France (24-9) at the end of July. The thought is that the winner would face Figueiredo at the end of the year to crown an undisputed flyweight champion.

However, Figueiredo is giving many pause in thinking this is a conclusion. In speaking with MMA Fighting this week, Figueiredo made it clear that unless his pay is increased, he’s going to make the move to the bantamweight division.

What will the UFC champion do?

Figueiredo said, “If we have a chat and they can increase my earnings inside the organization, then I’ll stay in the division. But, if nothing happens, I’ll be forced to move up. I’ll stay in the flyweight ]if they increase my purse. I already wanted [to move up] but still wanted to fight three more fights in the division.”

Figueiredo also criticized the UFC for making a ‘plastic belt’ for the Moreno – Kara-France fight. Now, as Figueiredo said, he’s been wanting to move up to bantamweight for a while. Flyweight has always been a terribly difficult cut for Figueiredo, but he’s made it work.

If I had to guess, I think they will get it worked out by the end of the year, but his next fight will likely be his last at 125. The UFC has taken care of Figueiredo in the past and I think they will again. However, these comments should act as further proof that the flyweight champion is gearing up for a move to 135.
