The UFC has finalized a big time matchup in the women’s flyweight division that will pair two top ten contenders against each other. MMA Fight Universe was the first to report that Alexa Grasso (14-3) will be taking on Viviane Araujo (11-3).

The matchup will take place at a UFC Fight Night on August 13th. At this time, it’s unclear whether the fight will serve as the main event or co-main event. For Araujo, she’s going to be looking to pick up her second straight win.

The last time we saw her was last month when she took on Andrea Lee. Things didn’t start well for Araujo but she closed strong over the final couple of rounds and was able to pick up a unanimous decision victory.

Araujo made her UFC debut back in 2019 when she sported a 6-1 record. Since debuting with the promotion, she’s gone 5-2 with the two losses coming against former title challenger Katlyn Chookagian and Jessica Eye.

Grasso new UFC flyweight contender?

After starting a perfect 8-0 in her professional career, Alexa Grasso made the jump to the UFC. In her second fight with the promotion, she lost to Felice Herrig. She also suffered losses to Tatiana Suarez and the currently strawweight champion Carla Esparza.

The problem for Grasso is she wasn’t competing in the correct weight class. She was cutting extra weight to make 115 pounds and it was hindering her performances. In 2020, she decided to move up to the flyweight division.

Since making that jump, Grasso has resumed all the hype that she had when she entered the UFC. She’s gone a perfect 3-0 since jumping up to flyweight. The performance that raised many eye brows was her domination over Maycee Barber.

However, it was her last performance that really got me. She was able to impressively submit Joanne Wood in the first round. This win really established Grasso as a contender in the UFC’s flyweight division.

If she defeats Araujo on August 13th, she might only be one more win away from getting herself a title shot.
