Last week, it was announced that the main event of UFC 282 on December 12th would be the light heavyweight title rematch between Jiri Prochazka and Glover Teixeira. While that’s a great fight, it’s not the fight that fans wanted for the final PPV headliner.
Fans have wanted to see the heavyweight debut of Jon Jones (26-1, 1 NC). Jones hasn’t fought since 2020 as he’s been preparing for his move to the heavyweight division. In an ideal world, the UFC would have had Francis Ngannou available to make the title superfight between Jones and Miocic.
However, Ngannou is still recovering from knee surgery and likely won’t be ready before March. Having the itch to fight, Jones wanted the UFC to book him against former heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic (20-4). The hope was to book these two for the interim title in December.
Jones calling for UFC 282
In that ideal world, the interim title fight would headline UFC 282 and then the winner would fight Ngannou for the undisputed title in the spring. Whoever wins would setup a massive showdown with Ngannou. With Jones, it would easily be the most hyped title fight in the promotion’s history.
With Miocic, it would be the third fight of the trilogy between himself and Ngannou. There’s not been a lot of word regarding the delay. Well, Jones took to Twitter last night and said that he’s still wanting to fight Miocic at UFC 282.
If the promotion can make it happen, they absolutely will. I really hope they can because Stipe Miocic deserves another crack at the title and Jon Jones needs to fight this year if possible. Time will tell if the fight actually happens.
