The UFC has a potential grudge match that fans have been waiting years for. For the last couple of years, fans have wanted to see former best friends turned enemies fight. Just a few years ago, Jorge Masvidal (35-15) and Colby Covington (16-3) were best friends.

The two were training partners and they were roommates. Covington was struggling to gain traction in the UFC and needed to switch things up with his persona in order to garner more attention. That’s when we saw the Colby Covington everyone knows start to make headlines.

Covington went on an incredible run that led him to the interim UFC welterweight title. However, during this process, some bridges were burned with his former gym and inner circle. One of the bridges that was burned was with his former friend and roommate Jorge Masvidal.

In early 2021, the UFC was working on having Masvidal and Covington coach The Ultimate Fighter against each other with a fight after the season. However, the promotion switched up the plan once they were able to get back in full arenas. Masvidal ended up getting a title shot.

UFC working on grudge match?

Masvidal ended up fighting Kamaru Usman at UFC 261 in Florida. Unfortunately for Gamebred, he suffered a brutal knockout loss at the hands of the welterweight champion. Then, Covington had his second crack at Usman back in November.

Once again, Covington gave Usman a good fight, but Usman pulled away and won a decision. Now, Covington and Masvidal are in a very similar spot. Both are near the very top of the UFC’s welterweight division, however, both have two losses to Kamaru Usman.

With that in mind, it looks like the perfect time for the UFC to put this fight together. Masvidal shed some light on the potential matchup late last week when he tweeted out at Covington saying the UFC would be calling. Anyone you talk to seems to think this fight is coming together quickly.

I would guess that the UFC’s march PPV could be the spot for this fight if not late spring/early summer. Either way, we will definitely be seeing Covington and Masvidal settle the score sometime this year.
