Did former UFC title challenger Ray Borg retire?

It’s been a rough couple of years for the Tazmexican Devil. Former UFC title challenger Ray Borg (13-5) has gone through a lot from injuries, to major health issues with his newborn son, to weight issues when it came to his fights.

He also recently pulled out of two fights at the very last minute. These pull outs prompted the UFC to cut the former title challenger. Borg had fought twice in 2020 to a 1-1 record. He defeated Rogerio Bontorin, but after that fight he was forced to move up to bantamweight after he missed weight again.

In his bantamweight debut, Borg lost a split decision to Ricky Simon. Borg is 2-2 overall since his UFC title loss to Mighty Mouse Johnson. Borg had been with the UFC for six years prior to being cut. Yesterday, Borg seemingly retired via his Instagram.

What’s next for the former UFC contender?

“Been in this game for a solid 14 years, never did I think retirement would come at the age of 27,” Borg posted yesterday. “But some decisions are harder than others and I have to make sure I am making the right one for my family… it may be time to move on to the next chapter of my life. Much love everyone!”

Since posting, this post has been taken down. We do not know what Borg is going through, and maybe it was an emotional moment that prompted him to post that he’s walking away from MMA.

Prior to being cut by the UFC, Borg was an extremely well rounded fighter. When on his game, he could compete with just about anyone in the UFC‘s flyweight division. Of course, things outside the cage have impacted his performance.

Despite getting a couple of wins, I’m not really sure that we saw a focused Ray Borg. That is completely understandable given all that he’s gone through. At just 27, I hope that things calm down in the life of Borg.

He’s still young and by the standards of other fighters, he hasn’t even reached his prime yet. The hope is that things can settle down for him in a way that will allow him to focus on his MMA career moving forward. If he can get his life on track, I believe we will see him back in the UFC one day.
